R Baley & Sons Farms grows fresh market Russet potatoes on 505 acres spread across three nearby farms. We also grow alfalfa, winter wheat, spring wheat, and barley, creating a conservation crop rotation system through our fields is what keeps the ground rested and the potatoes healthy when they come back around. Fresh market means our potatoes go straight to grocery stores and kitchens. How they look and how they're handled matters at every step from planting through irrigation to the day they leave the cellar. We're a small operation, and that's an advantage.
Keeping a farm this size going takes everybody. Several of us work full-time jobs and still farm evenings, weekends, and every day of harvest. And the kids grow up helping alongside the adults. We test our soil so we're feeding our fields what they actually need and nothing they don't. We plant cover crops and keep our tillage light for the same reason. Healthy ground is what makes another season possible, and we'd like there to be many more of them. We may not be the biggest farm, but every acre matters to us, and so does every potato that leaves this place with our name on it.
